Aparna Yadav is an Indian politician, social activist, and classical singer from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She is best known as the younger daughter-in-law of late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. She first entered politics with the Samajwadi Party and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in January 2022. She has served as Vice-Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission.

Aparna Yadav Background

Early Life Story

Aparna was born in Uttarakhand and grew up in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Her family had a strong background in journalism and government service.

Her father worked as a journalist and later became the State Information Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. Her mother served as an officer with the Lucknow Municipal Corporation. This environment gave Aparna an early exposure to public affairs and civic life.

She studied in Lucknow schools before going abroad for higher education. She completed her Master’s degree in International Relations and Politics from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Along with her studies, she also trained in classical music for about nine years at the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow. She learned Thumri singing and also plays the Veena.

Family Background

Aparna’s father, Arvind Singh Bisht, started his career as a journalist. He later became the State Information Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. Her mother, Ambi Bisht, worked with the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.

Aparna and Prateek Yadav had known each other since their school days. They got married in 2011 at a grand ceremony held in Saifai, Etawah. Amitabh Bachchan was among the guests at the wedding.

Their marriage drew public attention because Aparna comes from a Rajput family while Prateek belonged to the Yadav political family. Both families eventually accepted the relationship.

Prateek Yadav was a businessman and fitness entrepreneur. He passed away in May 2026 at the age of 38.

Education

Aparna did her schooling at City Montessori School in Lucknow. She then moved to Loreto Convent Intermediate College, where she also completed her undergraduate studies in English Literature.

For her postgraduate degree, she went to the United Kingdom. She studied International Relations and Politics at the University of Manchester.

She also spent nine years learning classical music at the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow. This is one of India’s oldest music institutes. She has performed at cultural events like Saifai Mahotsav and Lucknow Mahotsav.

Professional Journey

Political Career

Aparna entered politics in 2017. The Samajwadi Party gave her a ticket to contest from the Lucknow Cantonment assembly seat in the UP state elections.

She lost the election to BJP’s Rita Bahuguna Joshi. But the contest made her a known political figure in the state.

In January 2022, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the UP Assembly elections. She said she was inspired by the work of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

In September 2024, the UP government appointed her as Vice-Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission.

Social Work

Aparna runs bAware, an organization that works for women’s safety and empowerment.

She also operates Kanha Upvan, a cow shelter in Lucknow, and supports stray animal rescue through an initiative called Jeev Ashray.

In 2020, she donated ₹11 lakh for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
