Murthala Fançony Bravo de Oliveira was born on 17 February 1977 in Luanda, the capital of Angola, during a period of political upheaval and civil war that would later shape much of his lyrical perspective. His father, Fançony Bravo de Oliveira, was a community organizer, and his mother worked as a schoolteacher.
He spent his formative years between Luanda’s musseques (urban neighborhoods) and, later, Johannesburg, South Africa, where he attended a Fine Arts high school.
