He was born on 16th December 1959  in Haradanahalli, Mysore State, Karnataka, India. He is the son of the former Prime Minister of India, H. D. Deve Gowda. Gowda is also a film producer, distributor and exhibitor in the Kannada films.

He completed primary education in a government school in Hassan District. He finished his high school studies in Bangalore’s MES Educational Institution in Jayanagar. He completed his PUC from Vijaya College and earned his B.Sc. from National College in Jayanagar, Bangalore. He married Anitha on 13 March 1986. Kumaraswamy and Anitha have a son, Nikhil Gowda.

Kumaraswamy married Kannada actress Radhika in 2006. They have a daughter together named Shamika K. Swamy. This marriage came under legal scrutiny over violating marriage code under Hindu Personal Law, section 494 of Indian Penal Code. However, Karnataka High Court dismissed the case on the basis of lack of evidence.
