Hailey Bills Early Life and Background
Dance wasn’t her first activity of choice. She tried soccer and gymnastics before settling on dance around age six, once her parents insisted she pick just one activity. She trained early on with a recreational team before the family moved to Texas, where she joined a competitive company and started entering national conventions.
A move back to Utah put her at Center Stage Performing Arts Studio in Orem, a training ground that has produced several other Dancing with the Stars names. That’s where she began ballroom lessons around age 12, learning Latin styles like cha-cha and rumba alongside her regular jazz and contemporary training.
Hailey Bills Education
Bills finished high school in Utah and briefly danced on a college team while studying psychology, doing schoolwork on tour buses between rehearsals. She stepped away from college dance after her first big touring job, choosing to pursue dance professionally instead of finishing her degree.

Athletics and dance both run deep in her family. Her father, KC Bills, played football at BYU, and her mother, Stacy Bills, was a competitive gymnast and dancer who now coaches the BYU Cougarettes. Her aunt, Jenna Johnson, is a longtime Dancing with the Stars professional and mentored her early on.
Growing up, chores and carpool duty ran nonstop with that many kids in the house. Bills has said her parents always joked they couldn’t keep driving her everywhere once she picked a single activity, which nudged her toward committing to dance early.
Family ties reach further into the dance world too. Through her aunt Jenna’s marriage, professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy is also part of her extended family circle, and she has lived with the couple during parts of her career.
Hailey Bills Career
Bills got her first big break right out of high school, joining Derek Hough’s touring show after her studio director sent him a reference. It was her first professional job, and she spent months on the road with the cast, splitting her time between performing at night and college coursework during the day. She’s called it one of the best years of her life.
The next call came out of nowhere. While driving through Utah, she got a phone call from her aunt Jenna Johnson and uncle-by-marriage Val Chmerkovskiy, who then patched in a Dancing with the Stars casting producer. Bills joined the show’s troupe, learning opening numbers, filling in as a camera-blocking stand-in for the professional dancers, and choreographing group routines with the rest of the troupe.
That troupe run led to a full promotion for Season 35, where Bills was paired with reality star Sarah Jane Nader in one of the show’s first same-sex professional pairings. She has also performed alongside Derek Hough at a nationally televised Savannah Bananas baseball game and toured with the Dancing with the Stars live show. But between competition seasons, she still trains in ballroom, jazz, and contemporary styles to keep her range sharp.
