Marco Antonio Rubio is an American politician, lawyer, and author from Miami, Florida. He served as a U.S. Senator from Florida for 14 years before becoming the 72nd United States Secretary of State in January 2025. He is the first Latino to hold the position of Secretary of State in American history.

Early Life Story

Marco Rubio was born on May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida. His parents had immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1956, before Fidel Castro came to power.

His family was not wealthy. His father worked as a bartender and his mother worked as a hotel housekeeper. Growing up, Marco saw his parents work hard every day to support the family.

When Marco was around eight years old, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. His father worked at Sam’s Town Hotel there and his mother worked at the Imperial Palace Hotel.

The family returned to Miami in 1985. After coming back, Marco reconnected with his Cuban roots and the Catholic Church.

Family Background

Marco’s father, Mario Rubio Reina, spent most of his career working as a bartender at hotels in Las Vegas and Miami. His mother, Oriales García Rubio, worked as a housekeeper and later as a retail worker at K-Mart.

His parents became U.S. citizens in 1975. Marco has often spoken publicly about how their hard work shaped his beliefs about opportunity and the American Dream.

His wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, is of Colombian descent. She was a professional cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins. The two got married in a Catholic ceremony in October 1998. Together they have four children.

Education

Marco completed his schooling at South Miami Senior High School in 1989. He was a good football player and received a scholarship to attend Tarkio College in Missouri.

After one year, he transferred back to Florida. He finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, earning a degree in Political Science in 1993.

He then went to the University of Miami School of Law and earned his law degree in 1996 — graduating cum laude. During law school, he also interned for U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, which gave him his first close look at politics.

Professional Journey

Early Political Career

After finishing law school, Marco worked as an attorney in Miami. He practiced land use and real estate law at Broad and Cassel.

In 1998, he entered politics by winning a seat on the West Miami City Commission. This was his first elected position.

In January 2000, he won a special election and entered the Florida House of Representatives. He rose quickly within the party — becoming Majority Whip, then Majority Leader, and finally Speaker of the Florida House in 2006.

At age 34, he became the youngest person and the first Cuban-American to serve as Speaker of the Florida House.

U.S. Senate Career

In 2010, Marco ran for the U.S. Senate from Florida. He was seen as an outsider candidate backed by the Tea Party movement. He won with 49% of the vote in a three-way race.

As a Senator, he focused heavily on foreign policy, especially issues related to Cuba, Venezuela, China, and Latin America. He also served on the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Committee on Foreign Relations.

In 2013, he was part of the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” group that tried to pass immigration reform. The bill did not pass the House, and he later withdrew his support.

He was re-elected to the Senate in 2016 and again in 2022.

In April 2015, Marco announced he was running for President of the United States. He positioned himself as a fresh face for the Republican Party.

His campaign ran into trouble during the Republican primary. Donald Trump repeatedly called him “Little Marco” during debates and rallies. After losing the Florida primary to Trump on March 15, 2016, Marco suspended his campaign.

He later ran for re-election to the Senate, won, and went on to become one of Trump’s most trusted voices on foreign policy.

Secretary of State

In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. The U.S. Senate confirmed him unanimously, 99-0, on January 20, 2025.

He became the 72nd Secretary of State and the first Latino to hold the position in American history.

In May 2025, he was also appointed as Acting National Security Advisor — a dual role last held by Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.
